AHIMSA

Harmlessness
Ahimsa: Non-violence.

In Sanskrit, himsa is doing harm or causing injury. The "a" placed before the word negates it. Very simply, ahimsa is abstaining from causing hurt or harm. It is gentleness and non injury, whether physical, mental or emotional. It is good to know that nonviolence speaks only to the most extreme forms of wrongdoing, while ahimsa (which includes not killing) goes much deeper to prohibit the subtle abuse and the simple hurt.

This was not meant merely to condemn killing, but extended to harm caused by one's thoughts, words and deeds of all kinds--including injury to the natural environment.

Even the intent to injure, even violence committed in a dream, is a violation of the principle of ahimsa.

AHIMSA-SHANTI.

Ahimsa - "commitment to harmlessness." Central and primary to making the mind pure is to take and maintain a vow of harmlessness. However much we may suffer, we won't take it out on other people - that's harmlessness in action.

Shanti - "commitment to peaceful living." Another important vow/commitment is that of trying to live as harmoniously, virtuously, and peacefully as we can.

These two commitments help us consider the impact of our own behavior on the lives and welfare of others.

HOLISTIC HARMLESSNESS.

We should be aiming at reducing all harmful activities in every area (each center) of human life:

  1. Harmlessness to the body and all bodies

  2. Harmlessness in sex

  3. Harmlessness between genders

  4. Harmlessness in the family

  5. Harmlessness between all people

  6. Harmlessness in politics

  7. Harmlessness in economics

  8. Harmlessness in technology

  9. Harmlessness in business

  10. Harmlessness to the environment

  11. Harmlessness in resolving conflict

  12. Harmlessness in social interaction

  13. Harmlessness in education

  14. Harmlessness in thought and imagination

  15. Harmlessness throughout society

  16. Adequate and fair means to deal with those who break the law of harmlessness
