Yggdrasil, the World Ash (Norse)

The Garden of the Hesperides is Hera's orchard in the west, where either a single tree or a grove of Illumination - immortality-giving golden apples grew. The apples were planted from the fruited branches that Gaia the Earth Goddess gave to her as a wedding gift when Hera accepted Zeus. The 3 lady Hesperides were given the task of tending to the grove, but occasionally plucked from it themselves. Not trusting them, Hera also placed in the garden a never-sleeping, hundred-headed, dragon, named Ladon, see the SECOND HERCULEAN LABOUR OF THE Lenean Hydra - this is the same beast as Ladon - as an additional safeguard.

 

 

In Greek mythology, the Lernaean Hydra (Greek: Λερναία Ὕδρα) was an ancient nameless serpent-like chthonic water beast that possessed numerous heads— the poets mention more heads than the vase-painters could paint— and poisonous breath (Hyginus, 30). The Hydra of Lerna had heads which when cut sprouted three more, was killed by Hercules as the Second of his Twelve Labours and refers to the rubbish unnecessary thoughtforms of the mind created by trauma formed Energy Blockages. Hercules destroyed the heads of the Hydra with Sacred Kundalini Fire - The Energy Enhancement Meditation and the Seven Step Process for the removal of Energy Blockages.

The Eleventh Labour of Hercules

Walter Burkert has called the labours and other myths of Hercules "a conglomerate of popular tales which was exploited only secondarily by the high art of poetry", and it was not until the fifth century that poets of the Classic age could draw the myth into "a tragic, heroic, and human atmosphere and away from its natural thrust outwards to a carefree realm beyond the human" (Burkert 1985:208).

As philosophical, moral, and eventually allegorical overlays came to be applied to Hercules  death-cheating superhuman exploits, behind their outer, literal meaning, the Hercules figure came to represent an inner mystical tradition, and thus the labours could be interpreted in terms of the spiritual path. The last three labours (10-12) of Heracles are generally considered metaphors about death or illumination. Hercules was unique among Greek heroes in that no tomb of Hercules was ever localized, and the Olympian sacrifices and chthonic libations were offered simultaneously to him everywhere.

In order to make Ten out of the Twelve Labours of Heracles (also known as the Twelve Labours of Hercules), and thus destroy the essence of the Ilumination myth path, it was suggested that Eurystheus discounted those where Heracles was aided or paid, and so two additional labours were given.

The first of these was to steal the apples from the garden of the Hersperides. Heracles first caught Nereus, the shape-shifting sea god, to learn where the Garden of the Hesperides was located. In some variations, Heracles, either at the start or at the end of his task, meets Antaeus, who was invincible as long as he touched his mother, Gaia, the earth goddess.

Antaeus was killed (the process of Illumination requires the ability to get out of the body into the higher chakras, the same path we take when we die, but without the advantage of being able to come back along the Silver Chord) Antaeus was killed by suspending him in a tree - SEE THE MYTH OF ODIN IN AXIS MUNDI where Odin spent 9 nights supended in the Axix Mundi Tree above the Crown Chakra in order to become Illuminated and gain psychic vision - make all his sight one in the third eye.

Finally making his way to the Garden of the Hesperides, Heracles tricked Atlas into retrieving some of the golden apples for him, by offering to hold up the heavens for a little while (Atlas was able to take them as, in this version, he was the father or otherwise related to the Hesperides). Upon his return, Atlas decided that he did not want to take the heavens back, and instead offered to deliver the apples himself, but Heracles tricked him again by agreeing to take his place on condition that Atlas relieve him temporarily so that Heracles could make his cloak more comfortable. Atlas agreed, but Heracles reneged and walked away. According to an alternative version, Heracles slew Ladon - a hundred headed Kundalini Serpent which refers to instead.

According to some Heracles was the only person to steal the apples, other than Perseus, although Athena later returned the apples to their rightful place in the garden. They are considered by some to be the same "apples of joy"  - The Golden Apples of the Sun, that tempted Atalanta, as opposed to the "apple of discord" - Blockages which exist above the Crown Chakra, cutting us off from our Soul Chakra - used by Eris to start a beauty contest (The Ego Blockages) on Olympus.

On Attic pottery, especially from the late fifth century, Heracles is depicted sitting in bliss in the Gardens of the Hesperides, attended by the maidens. This is the Story of Heaven - in the Chakras above the head along the Antahkarana of the World Tree of Axis Mundi. Later, William Shakespeare wrote "For valour, is not Love a Hercules. Still climbing trees in the Hesperides?" (Love's Labours Lost, IV.III).

HERCULES, THE SON OF GOD, DEOS OR ZEUS, NEEDS TO CONTACT THE CHAKRAS ABOVE THE HEAD IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE ILLUMINATION. Both Vishnu the Mind or Shakti Kundalini Energies in the Center of the earth are essentially quiescent, female, passive and only reflect the Higher Energies of God, Father, Brahman thus they reflect –

Chitta represents the purified mind represented by the lunar hemisphere of the OM Symbol and the Islamic Symbol reflecting the light of the Sun. This lunar hemisphere represents a cup into which fall the intuitive energies of God. Like the Cup which Jesus Christ used on the Night before he was taken by the Romans and the Pharisees it holds the Blood of Christ, The Sangreal - Sang (Blood) Real (True) – This Cup of the purified mind holding no Encapsulated Trauma, Guilty Shameful Karma or Energy Blockages which produce unwanted Chitta Chatter represents The Holy Grail of all Spiritual seekers, Illumination, Enlightenment which is the result of the purified mind, a mind born of meditation as says the Fourth Book of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. Then the mind glows (Illumination, EnLIGHTenment) with the energies of God producing the Halos we see above the heads of Saints.

The axis mundi and the Antahkarana also cosmic axis, world axis, world pillar, Antahkarana, Omphalos and center of the world is a symbol representing the column of connection between sky and earth or Enlightenment. It shows connection between the two realms. It rises from the place where the four compass directions unite in the Center of the Earth, allowing spiritual spiral energy treasure from heaven to be disseminated throughout the world along the heart horizontal limb nailed onto the Axis Mundi at the Heart Center creating the Cross of Christ.

The axis mundi appears in many cultures and takes many forms. A Line of Energy flowing from Heaven through the Surface of the Earth into the very center of the earth.

 The image is a trinity of

1.      Top of the column – Heaven,

2.      Column – the flow of spiritual Energy of the Holy Spirit

3.      Bottom of the column on the surface of the earth, The Son, Vishnu or Krishna or Christ or Deeper –

4.      Shakti Kundalini Energy from the Center of the Earth

It may have the form of a natural object (a mountain, a tree, a vine, a stalk, a column of smoke or fire) or a product of human manufacture (a staff, a tower, a ladder, a staircase, a maypole, a cross, a steeple, a rope, a totem pole, a pillar, a spire). Its proximity to heaven may carry implications that are chiefly religious (pagoda, temple mount, church) or secular (obelisk, minaret, lighthouse, rocket, skyscraper). The axis mundi features prominently in cultures utilizing shamanic practices or those with animist belief systems. Yet it appears just as prominently in the most technologically advanced cultures – wherever the impulse persists to link a tower with the spiritual idea of a "world center" Axis Mundi.

Squaring the Circle, Ankh and Axis Mundi

In respect of the Axis Mundi – Antahkarana column of Energy This column can exist at any point on the earths surface – a mid point between Heaven and the Center of the earth. The Column of Axis Mundi is always at right angles to the tangent surface of the earth. The Column is always square to the tangent surface of the earth and the Earth is a Circle. To Square the Circle is yet another symbol or representation of the column of Axis Mundi – Antahkarana – Ankh.

Ancient Ankh – The Circle is the Earth, Tangent to the circle earth, and the World tree Antahkarana which arises from the center of the earth and is Square to the tangent, thus, “Squaring the Circle” is the alignment of the spine with the Kundalini Energies from the Center of the Earth in Meditation.

Axis Mundi and Mountains

It comes naturally to think of one's own home and land as "the center of the world" because it is the center of one's known universe. The name of China or "Middle Kingdom" – expresses an ancient belief that the country stood at the center of the world.

Within this central known universe a specific spot –often a mountain or other elevated place, where earth and sky come closest – gains status as center of the center, the axis mundi. High mountains are typically regarded as sacred by peoples living near them. Shrines are often erected at the summit or base. Japan's highest mountain, Mount Fuji, has long symbolized the world axis in Japanese culture. Mount Kun-Lun fills a similar role in China. Sioux beliefs take the Black Hills as the axis mundi. Mount Kailash is holy to several religions in Tibet.

In ancient Mesopotamia the cultures of ancient Sumer and Babylon erected artificial mountains, or ziggurats, on the flat river plain. These supported staircases leading to temples at the top. The Pyramids of Egypt similarly. The pre-Columbian residents of Teotihuacán in Mexico erected huge pyramids featuring staircases leading to heaven.^[4] The Middle Kingdom, China, had a central mountain, Kun-Lun, known in Taoist literature as "the mountain at the middle of the world." To "go into the mountains" meant to dedicate oneself to a spiritual life.

Because the axis mundi is an idea that unites a number of concrete images, no contradiction exists in regarding multiple spots as "the center of the world." The symbol can operate in a number of locales at once. The ancient Greeks regarded several sites as places of earth's omphalos (navel) stone, notably the oracle at Delphi, while still maintaining a belief in a cosmic world tree and in Mount Olympus as the abode of the gods. Judaism has Mount Sinai and Mount Zion, Christianity has the Mount of Olives and Calvary, Islam has the Temple Mount (Dome of the Rock) and Mecca, said to be the place on earth that was created first. In addition to Kun-Lun the ancient Chinese recognized four mountains as pillars of the world.

All sacred places constitute world centers (omphalos) with the altar or place of prayer as the axis. Altars, incense sticks, candles and torches form the axis by sending a column of smoke, and prayer, toward heaven. As the incense is consumed so purified sacred ash is created, much like a human beings process of enlightenment. The sacred ash of the Hindus is created from cow shit. Burning creates a white sacred ash – Vibuti which is then used to bless and purify the forehead of Ajna Chakra, the mind. The architecture of sacred places often reflects this role. The stupa of Hinduism, and later Buddhism, reflects Mount Meru.

Cathedrals are laid out in the form of a cross, with the vertical bar representing the union of earth and heaven as the horizontal bars represent union of people to one another, with the altar at the intersection. Pagoda structures in Asian temples take the form of a stairway linking earth and heaven. A steeple in a church or a minaret in a mosque also serve as connections of earth and heaven. Structures such as the maypole, derived from the Saxons' Irminsul, and the totem pole among indigenous peoples of the Americas also represent world axes. The calumet, or sacred pipe, represents a column of smoke (the soul) rising form a world center.

Axis Mundi and the Antahkarana and Plants

A plant can serve as the axis mundi. The tree provides an axis that unites three planes: its branches reach for the sky, its trunk meets the earth, and it roots reach down into the underworld.

The Ancient Hindu Bhagavad Gita talks of a tree stretching from the center of the earth into heaven and this myth spread far into South East Asia and the pacific affecting Shamen and Religion all over that area. In some Pacific island cultures the banyan tree, of which the Bodhi tree is of the Sacred Fig variety, is the abode of ancestor spirits. The Bodhi Tree is also the name given to the tree under which Gautama Siddhartha, the historical Buddha, sat on the night he attained enlightenment.

Yggdrasil, the World Ash (Norse)

In Norse mythology, Yggdrasil (Old Norse Yggdrasil, the extra -l is a nominative case marker) is the World Tree, a great ash tree located at the center of the universe and joining the nine worlds or chakras of Norse cosmology. The trunk of the tree may be thought of as forming a vertical axis around which these worlds are situated, with Ásgard, realm of the gods, at the top and the underworld realm of Niflheim at the bottom. Midgard, the world of mortals, is located in the middle and surrounded by Jötunheim, land of giants, both of which are separated by the ocean. Yggdrasil is also sometimes known as Mimameid or Laerad.

While the name Yggdrasil means the "terrible steed", it is usually taken to mean the "steed of the terrible one", with Yggr the epithet of the god Odin. In other words, Odin's horse, referring to the nine nights he is said to have spent in meditation in the chakras above the head hanging from the tree, or "riding the gallows", symbol of Death – this means he had to leave the body in Meditation and rise towards higher chakras above the head in order to acquire knowledge of the divination of the runes. “Drop Body, Drop Mind” Zen Master Dogen

Relating to the shamen of the Saami, a person can send out their Hugr ('soul', 'mind force', or 'consciousness') to travel via the Tree from this mind to another or to higher chakras above the head. Body Jumping.

To contemplate the entirety of all worlds and transcend them to peer out across the infinite nothingness of Ginnungagap, the Abyss of Hermes Trismegistus, the Other Shore of Gautama Buddha’s Heart Sutra, “Lets Go! Let’s Go To the Other Shore. Landed on the Other Shore. Bodhi Svaha!! Enlightenment Is!! awakens existential power. Ójinn rises up the Higher Chakras of the Tree in a Samadhi trance-like experience that transcends the worlds of life and death, to achieve Enlightenment.

The poem Grímnismál has much to say concerning Yggdrasil. According to stanzas 25 and 26, the goat Heidrun stands atop the roof of Valhalla and feeds from the leaves and branches of the tree. From her udder flows an endless cornucopia supply of mead for the einherjar. Likewise, the stag Eikthyrnir also feeds from the tree atop the roof of the hall, and from his antlers water drips into the wellspring Hvergelmir, located in Niflheim and from which all rivers flow. In both stanzas the tree is called Laerad but is often identified with the World Tree.

In addition, a two winged eagle sits perched above while the Dragon Kundalini Serpent Nidhogg rends the tree from beneath, and serving the role of a messenger (the Caduceus of Mercury) bearing spiteful words between the two is a squirrel named Ratatosk who must run up and down the length of the trunk which is gradually rotting. "The ash of Yggdrasil suffers agony more than men know", (“Love is the Energy of Change” - Satchidanand) and yet according to stanza 44 it is still the "noblest of trees."

Other examples include Jievaras in Lithuanian mythology and Thor's Oak in the myths of the pre-Christian Germanic peoples. The Tree of Life and the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil in Genesis present two aspects of the same image. Each is said to stand at the center of the Paradise garden from which four rivers flow to nourish the whole world. Each tree confers a boon. Bamboo, the plant from which Asian calligraphy pens are made, represents knowledge and is regularly found on Asian college campuses. The Christmas tree, which can be traced in its origins back to pre-Christian European beliefs, represents an axis mundi. Entheogens (psychoactive substances) are often regarded as world axies, such as the Fly Agaric mushroom among the Evenks of Russia.

Axis Mundi and the Antahkarana and Human form

The human form can function as a world axis. Some of the more abstract Tree of Life representations, such as the Sefiroth in Kabbalism and in the Chakra system recognized by Hinduism and Buddhism, merge with the concept of the human body as a pillar between heaven and earth. Disciplines such as Yoga and Tai Chi begin from the premise of the human body as axis mundi. Astrology in all its forms assumes a connection between human health and affairs and the orientation of these with planets representing Chakras. World religions regard the body itself as a temple and prayer as a column uniting earth to heaven. The Renaissance image known as the Vitruvian Man represented a symbolic and mathematical exploration of the human form as world axis.

Axis Mundi and the Antahkarana and Houses

Houses also serve as world centers. The hearth participates in the symbolism of the altar and a central garden partipates in the symbolism of primordial paradise. In Asian cultures houses were traditionally laid out in the form of a square oriented toward the four compass directions. A traditional Asian home was oriented toward the sky through Feng shui, a system of geomancy, just as a palace would be. Traditional Arab houses are also laid out as a square (Base Chakra) surrounding a central fountain (See Alhambra Fountain, Granada, Sufi Knowledge and the Hindu Shiva Lingam) that evokes a primordial garden paradise. The nomadic peoples of Mongolia and the Americas more often lived in circular structures. The central pole of the tent still operated as an axis but a fixed reference to the four compass points was avoided.

Axis Mundi and the Antahkarana Shamanic function.

A common shamanic concept, and a universally told story, is that of the healer rising up the axis mundi to bring back knowledge from heaven and the higher chakras. It may be seen in the stories from Odin and the World Ash Tree to the Garden of Eden and Jacob's Ladder to Jack and the Beanstalk and Rapunzel. It is the essence of the journey described in The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri. The epic poem relates its hero's descent and ascent through a series of chakras that take him from through the center, core, of the earth, from the depths of Hell to celestial Paradise.

Anyone or anything suspended on the axis between heaven and earth becomes a repository of potential knowledge provided it has been tested as pure. A special status accrues to the thing suspended: a serpent, a victim of crucifixion or hanging, a rod, a fruit, mistletoe. Derivations of this idea find form in the Rod of Asclepius, a Kundalini snake entwined around a central stem, the emblem of the medical profession, and in the caduceus, an emblem of correspondence and commercial professions. The staff in these emblems represents the axis mundi while the Kundalini serpents act as the energies which pierce the chakras and purify the mind on the path of enlightenment, guardians of, or guides to sacred knowledge.

Caduceus. See also Omphalos.  The Kundalini Serpents in the Caduceus entwine around five lower chakras which connect to the Center of the Earth through the Base Chakra. The wings of Mercury of the mind at the top of the caduceus represent the two petals of Ajna Chakra of the Mind. The Circle at the top of the Caduceus of Mercury, the messenger of the gods, represents the crown or Sahasrara Chakra connected to the chakras above the head like the Sun, or Sirius also represented as a circle.

The Merkaba meditational construction for psychic protection and astral travel creates a tetrahedron turning anticlockwise connecting the lower axis mundi to the center of the earth and another tetrahedron turning clockwise and receiving through a higher Axis mundi, energies from the center of the universe. The Tibetan Prayer wheel also introduces the concept of the energies circling or spiralling around a central perpendicular column. The energies flow anti-clockwise looking in the direction of the flow away from you as these energies contain relativity.

Modern Expressions of Axis Mundi and the Antahkarana

Taipei 101 (Taiwan)

Axis mundi symbolism abounds in the modern world. A symbolic connection between earth and sky is present in all skyscrapers, as the term suggests, and in other spires.

Feng Shui which is the science of Earth Energies in Architecture as well as Internal Decoration to Increase earth Energies and remove negative Energies considers Skyscrapers to call Fire Dragons to them (Dragon – Serpent – Kundalini Earth Energies) Usually we put a pyramidal structure at the top of such building to call these fire Dragons such as the pyramidal Ben Stone at the top of Pyramids and also at the top of Big Ben in London.

The two towers of New York and the Two Tower Skyscrapers of Singapore represent the two Antahkaranas, Central and Governing Meridians, upward and downward flowing Antahkaranas of the Masons, symbolising Enlightenment.

Such buildings come to be regarded as "centers" of a civilization and icons of its ideals. The first skyscraper of modern times, the Eiffel Tower in Paris France, exemplifies this role. Taipei 101 in Taiwan, a twenty-first century descendant, unites the images of staircase, bamboo, pagoda, and pillar; at night, it also evokes a candle or torch. The Egyptian Obelisk-like Cleopatra’s Needle taken from Alexandria in Egypt to London and its mirror Obelisk taken similarly to Paris in France are also mirrored in the Washington Monument in the United States and capital buildings of all sorts fill this role. The Burj Dubai (United Arab Emirates) will fill the role as it adopts characteristically Arab axis mundi symbols.

The design of a tower emphasizes different elements of the symbol. Twin towers, such as the Petronas Towers (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) and the former World Trade Center (Manhattan), maintain the axis symbolism even as they more obviously assume the role of pillars from the Masonic Egyptian tradition, Jubelo Jubeli. Some structures pierce the sky, implying movement or flight (Chicago Spire, CN Tower in Toronto, the Space Needle in Seattle). Some structures highlight the more lateral elements of the symbol in implying portals (Tuntex Sky Tower in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, The Gateway Arch in Saint Louis).^[12]

Ancient traditions continue in modern structures. The Peace Pagodas built since the 1947 unite religious and secular purposes in one symbol drawn from Buddhism. The influence of the pagoda tradition may be seen in modern Asian skyscrapers (Taipei 101, Petronas Towers).

The various stages of the Pagodas and the Stupas and also the representations of higher chakras on world tree towers around, and the spires at the top of Islamic Cathedrals like the Blue Mosque and the Taj Mahal represent Chakras above the head as in the tradition of Dante Alegiri in the Divine Comedy. Meditation allows travel along Axis Mundi to these higher chakras which are higher Spiritual Functions enabling man to escape the confines of the Lower chakra bodies and attain Illumination.

The ancient ziggurat has likewise reappeared in modern form, including the headquarters of the National Geographic Society in Washington, DC and The Ziggurat housing the California Department of General Services. Architect Frank Lloyd Wright conceived the Guggenheim Museum in New York as an inverted ziggurat.

The Endless Column represents chakras above the head between man and god by Constantin Brâncusi (1938).

Modern artistic representations of the world axis abound. Prominent among these is The Endless Column (1938) an abstract sculpture by Romanian Constantin Brâncusi. The column takes the form of an umbilical or pillar linking earth to sky even as it’s rhythmically repeating segments suggest infinity or higher chakras above the head.

The association of the cosmic pillar with knowledge gives it a prominent role in the world of scholarship. University campuses typically assign a prominent axis role to some campus structure, such as a clock tower, library tower or bell tower. The building serves as the symbolic center of the scholastic "world" and as an emblem of its ideals. The symbolism also appears in the image of the "ivory tower," a colloquial metaphor for academia.^[13]

The image may still take natural forms, as in the American tradition of the Liberty Tree located at town centers. Individual homes continue to act as world axes, especially where Feng shui and other geomantic practices continue to be observed.

Axis mundi symbolism may be seen in much of the romance surrounding space travel. A rocket enables travel from earth to the heavens. On the pad it shares the symbolism of a tower, and at launch it creates a column of smoke from earth and sky. Astronauts embody the mythic story. Each embarks on a perilous journey into the heavens in the quest for knowledge; if successful the adventurer returns with a boon that benefits all the world. The motto on Apollo 13 insignia in 1970 stated the story succinctly: Ex luna scientia ("From the Moon, knowledge").

Axis Mundi and the Antahkarana in Modern Storytelling

The axis mundi continues to appear in fiction as well as in real-world structures. Appearances of the ancient image in the tales and myths of more recent times include these:

The ash tree growing in Hunding's living room, in Act 1 of Die Walküre (The Valkyrie), is one of many appearances of the image in the operas of Richard Wagner. Hunding's tree recalls the World Ash visited by Wotan, a central character in the Ring cycle of which this opera forms a part (1848-1874).

The Emerald City in the Land of Oz, depicted in the popular book by L. Frank Baum (1900), a student of Gurdjieff, and the subsequent MGM film (1939), stands at the center of the four compass directions.

Mount Doom or Orodruin. Its center fire filled lava represents the Center of the earth where the base metal of the One Ring, holding all the negative energy power of the Black Magician, Sauron, is transmuted into pure spiritual gold, is one of many representations of the symbol in The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R Tolkien (1937-1949).

Two Trees of Valinor, like the Two Masonic Pillars, Two Towers of New York, - in Tolkien's tellingly named Middle-earth produce the light of the Supreme God (1937-1949). Their fruit like the Golden apples of the Sun of the Hesperides of Hercules eleventh Labour on his path to enlightenment represent Chakras above the head.

The wardrobe and lamppost in The Chronicles of Narnia by C. S. Lewis (1949-1954) mark the spots where children travel between this world and the next and the place where the world ends.

In an episode of Seinfeld titled The Maid, Kramer finds himself at the corner of "1st and 1st...the Nexus of the Universe".

The wooded hilltop and ascending and descending staircases in The Midsummer Marriage, an opera by English composer Michael Tippett (1955), explore Jungian aspects of the symbol.

The pillar of fire rising to heaven from the ark of the covenant is recalled in the climax of Steven Spielberg's 1981 film Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981).

A huge sheltering tree on a hilltop appears near the end of Stealing Beauty, a 1996 film by Bernardo Bertolucci, to crown a series of images evoking the primordial Paradise garden.

In the surreal urban world of Gotham City, the Wayne Building acts as the symbolic center in Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins (2005), as does a fantastic cathedral-skyscraper-staircase-ladder combination in an earlier Batman film by Tim Burton (1989).

The Fountain, Director: Darren Aronofsky with actors Hugh Jackman, Rachel Weisz, and Ellen Burstyn shows evolution as a process through past, future and present lifetimes from Mayan Myth to transcending Gingunagap with the tree Yggdrasil to attain the eternal life of Enlightenment.

And when at the end of the movie when Tom was handing the Sword Soul of the Meditation of the head Samurai to the Emperor, he was handing on the message of meditation. And that meditation so strengthened the courage of the Emperor that he became capable of throwing out the bad people in his Government.

He is still passing that Sword to You, so that you can cast out all your negative energy blockages! ....

Today no Government can  promise you security in the face of Selfish Desire, Weapons of Mass Destruction, and Terrorism. They can not prevent!!!

This same pollution which previously created the  scourge of Tuberculosis is now creating the killers of Cancer, Heart Disease, Aids and low birth rates in every country in the world.

Also the fact that throughout the world many children are lacking in parents, food, water, houses and education and for this reason their pain will provide the next terror and war cannon fodder in the coming years of this century.

Our happiness is bound up in the happiness of others. Who are the happiest people, those who make everyone around them happy.

Governments and the people who run them never have had this point of view. They do not meditate!

Their control comes from making their people afraid, and for this an enemy is needed. Or it does not fit into their budget. All they can do is to report what happens, that this bank has been robbed by some burglars and this company has failed with the loss of the pension fund or that this country is going to war and yes, you are being conscripted, enslaved into the army.

This has been the case for 10,000 years whilst the governments of Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, Caligula, Nero, Genghis Khan, Napoleon, Hitler, Stalin, and Mao, have killed untold millions of people, 200 millions alone in the last century.

U2 at their concerts say the worlds biggest arms dealers are, in money order,  USA, UK, France, Russia, and China. An Arms budget of 400 Billions of Dollars per year are needed, 15 Trillions of Dollars have been spent on Arms since the second World War, wasted yet necessary because of this State of Insecurity.

Today we don't need the Old States of the past or even the United States or a State of Insecurity, Instead we need the State of Meditation on One Enlightened Harmonious World where everyone is given the opportunity to evolve, treated well... given food, accommodation, education, meditation, is happy, and an arms budget is not needed!!

This we need to Afford through your conscious choice, NOW. By choosing to practice Meditation. Through having a process of  Meditation every day you can enter into that Richer Life!! Through accelerating the Process with Energy Enhancement it can appear faster.

As meditation becomes the Practise of Choice in all people, Businesses, Politicians and Government itself, this will change and the whole World will become Defect Free!!

CAN THE WORLD SUPPORT ANOTHER WEST?

 

 Ruparahi, the future only appears bleak, but it has always appeared so. This is not anything new. You can go as far back as possible in human history, to the very first moment of human beginnings when Adam and Eve were expelled from the garden of Eden, and you will find the future has always looked bleak. Just think of Adam and Eve being thrown out of the garden of God and the doors being slammed behind them. How was the future? It must have appeared very bleak. All that they had known was being taken away. Their security, their safety, their world, everything was being taken away. What future hope was there? Only darkness, death. It must have been frightening.

 And this is not only a parable: each time a child is born the future looks bleak, because again the womb -- the safe secure environment of the womb -- is taken away from the child, and the helpless child is expelled. What do you think about the child? Psychoanalysts say that the greatest trauma is the birth trauma, and the person suffers it his whole life. The word "trauma" comes from a root which means "wound". The birth trauma is the greatest wound; it is very rare to find a person whose birth trauma is healed.

 It heals only when a person becomes enlightened, because when a person becomes enlightened he is again in the eternal womb of God; otherwise the wound goes on and on hurting.

 Your whole life you try to hide that wound, but by hiding it it cannot disappear. Each child being born, coming out of the birth canal, must be feeling the future is bleak; and each age has felt it. Because the future is unknown, that's why it looks bleak.

 This is not something new that modern man is feeling; it is as ancient as man. You can go to the ancient-most records and it is always said in every ancient scripture, "The future is bleak." And the corollary to it is that the past was golden. "The future is bleak." The past was good -- satyug, the Age of Truth; and the future, kalyug -- the Age of Death and Darkness.

 This attitude is somewhere deep in your mind; it has nothing to do with time and the realities surrounding you. And you have to drop this pessimistic attitude, Ruparahi. It all depends on your approach.

 For example, it is so simple to say that "the burden of the West already lies heavy on the world: the atomic bomb," and nobody will argue against you, it looks so obvious. But I would like to tell you to think again, reconsider. In fact, it is the atom bomb which has made wars impossible. Now there can be no world war.

 In the past we could have continued wars because our wars were so inefficient, there was no danger. That's why, down the ages, in three thousand years we have fought five thousand wars. There was no problem; it was just a game. And the male egoistic mind has enjoyed it very much, it has needed it very much. And wars would have continued if there was no atom bomb.

 

The atom bomb is the end of war.

 The future is not bleak. The very existence of the atom bomb means, now, if you decide for war, it will be universal suicide. Who is ready to take that risk? Nobody can win and everybody will die. Nobody can be the winner; then what is the point of the game?

 War is significant if somebody can win and somebody is defeated. War becomes absurd if nobody can win and both are destroyed. It is only because of the existence of the atom bomb that Russia and America are prevented from war; otherwise there seems to be no other possibility except war. Both are ready, absolutely ready, but the atom bomb is making it impossible.

 It is ridiculous now to go to war. If both parties are going to be destroyed, then what is the point? The atom bomb has made war pointless.

 When I think about the atom bomb I see great hope. I am not a pessimist at all. I believe things are going to be better every day, better and better. You will be surprised, but this is so simple if you understand.

 It is because of the atom bomb that war has become total. Up to now it was a partial thing -- a few people will die -- but now the whole earth will die. We have attained to superkill. We have so many bombs ready that we can kill each person one thousand times, we can destroy one thousand earths like this. This earth is small now before our destructive powers; compared to our destructive powers this earth is nothing.

 Now who is going to take this risk, and for what? You will not be there to gloat over your victory -- nobody will be there.

 War is not going to happen. The Third World War is not going to happen, and it will not be because of Buddha and Christ and their teachings of non-violence and love, no! It will be because of the atom bomb. Because death is absolute now, suicide will be complete. Not only will man be destroyed, but birds, animals, trees, all life will be destroyed on earth.

 This is the only possibility of dropping war forever. We have become too efficient in killing; now killing can be allowed no more. Think this way and you will be surprised -- then the future is bleak no more.

 You say, "... violence through frustration." That's true. Whenever one feels frustrated... and the world is feeling frustrated, particularly the West. Frustration comes as a shadow of success. In the East there is no frustration because there is no success, so the shadow is missing. In the West there is great frustration because the success has come; all that man ever needed is available, and there is no content ment. Success has failed -- that's the frustration.

 But that's also the point of sannyas, meditation, religion. Yes, you can become frustrated and you can become violent because all that you have hoped for has failed -- you have succeeded, and nothing has succeeded -- great frustration arises in you -- you can become murderous, you can become suicidal. But the other possibility is also there, you can start thinking in a totally new way: that success cannot be in the outer world, that success has to be something inner, that you were rushing in a wrong direction. Your direction was wrong; that's why you have failed.

 In the West, because of frustration, people are becoming more and more interested in meditation, prayer, contemplation. That too is part of the same frustration. My own observation is a person becomes a meditator only when there are only two possibilities: suicide or transformation.

 When in the outside world there seems to be only suicide and nothing else, then one turns in. Only at that point, at that peak of frustration, does one turn in. The turning in cannot happen in a lukewarm person; it happens only when things are really hot and there is no way outside anymore, all ways have been proved false. When you have been frustrated totally by the outside world and all exterior journeys, when all extroversion seems meaningless, only then does the desire, the longing for an inner pilgrimage open up.

 It has always been so. It is only at the extremes, when life faces a crisis, that transformations happen. Water evaporates at a hundred degrees; that much heat is needed. The West has created that much heat of frustration. A few people will become violent, a few people will become murderous, a few people will become suicidal, but the major part of humanity will start turning in.

 You say, "... the automatization of the soul." Industrialization and the growth of technology has not made man automatic, has not made man a machine. Man has always been a machine. Industrialization has only revealed the truth. It is a great revelation. Man has always lived in slavery, but the slavery was not so apparent, was not so penetrating; there was always an illusion of freedom.

 The mechanization of all that you are surrounded with has made you aware that you are also nothing but a machine. You have always been that. Buddhas have always been telling you that you exist unconsciously, that you exist like a robot, that you are not yet a man, but illusions persisted. The modern world has taken the last illusion from you, it has revealed the truth to you: that you are nothing but a machine efficient, inefficient, but a machine.

 It had to be so because only when you live with machines, only then can you become aware of your machine-like existence. You had always lived with trees and animals and people, and it had always given you the false idea that there is freedom.

 Freedom exists only when you are utterly conscious. Only a Buddha is free. Freedom is in Buddhahood; nobody else is free, nobody else can be free. But people can believe... it is a very consoling illusion. The modern world has taken your illusion away from you; and it is good because now a great desire to be free will arise, a great longing to attain to something beyond the machine.

 For example, the computer has proved that howsoever efficient you are in your mind it does not make you really a man, because that can be done better by a computer than by your mind. Now the people who used to do beautiful mathematics, remember things or play chess will be offended because the computer can do it in a far better way. And the work of the computer is so fast that they say, if a problem will take seventy years of his whole life for a great mathematician to solve, working day in, day out, the computer can solve it within a second.

 Now, what is the lesson to be learned? That the brain is nothing but a biocomputer. Without the computer it would never have been revealed to you that your brain is a computer. With the computer, now, the people who think they are great intellectuals, mathematicians, scientists, specialists, are all reduced to machines. It was not possible two thousand years before: there was no way to know that the mind functions as a machine, that the mind is nothing but a machine.

 There is just one thing the computer cannot do. It can be logical, but it cannot be loving; it can be rational, but it cannot be meditative. A computer cannot meditate, a computer cannot love -- and that is the hope, and that is where man can still go beyond machines. You can love. Your love will be the decisive factor in the coming days -- not logic: the computer is perfectly logical, more logical than any Aristotle; not mathematics: the computer is more mathematical than any Albert Einstein.

 The computer is going to solve all problems. The computer will solve every problem that scientists used to take years to solve. It can solve them within seconds. Sooner or later science will go into the hands of computers; the scientist will be needed only to operate the computer, that's all. The computer can do it far more quickly, far more efficiently, with less and less possibility of making any errors. This is something tremendously significant. It can make you very much frightened, it can give you the idea that there is nothing left, man is a machine; but it can also fill you with great hope that now the computer has revealed that the head is not man's real reality.

 Now we have to search for the heart, because the computer has no heart. Only by searching for our heart, only by allowing our heart to dance and sing and love, will we be able to retain the glory and dignity of being man; otherwise it is gone.

 The future looks bleak to you because you only see the darker side of the phenomenon. You are not aware of its lighter side. I see the dawn coming very close. Yes, the night is very dark, but the future is not bleak, not at all.

 In fact, for the first time in human history millions of people will be able to become Buddhas. It was very rare to become a Buddha in the past because it was very rare to become aware of the mechanicalness of man. It needed great intelligence to be aware that man is a machine. But now it will not need any intelligence at all; it will be so obvious that man is a machine.

 And you say, "... the destruction of the forests and the pollution of the air and sea so that it is uncertain whether the environment can maintain its delicate balance. Can the world support another West?" That is one of the most beautiful things about science and technology: it creates problems just to solve them. And the problem can only be solved when it has been created; then it becomes a challenge. Now the greatest challenge before technology is how to maintain the balance of nature, how to maintain ecological harmony. It was never there before, it is a new problem.

 For the first time the West is facing a new problem. We have lived on this earth for millions of years. Slowly, slowly we had been growing more and more expert technologically, but we had not yet been able to destroy the natural balance; we were yet a very small force on the earth. Now for the first time our energy is bigger, far bigger, than the earth's energy to keep its balance. This is a great phenomenon. Man has become so powerful that he can destroy the natural balance. But he will not destroy it, because to destroy the natural balance means he will be destroyed himself.

 He will find new ways; and new ways are being found. The way to regain the delicate balance of nature is not by renouncing technology. It is not by becoming hippies, it is not by becoming Gandhians or luddites, no, not at all. The way to regain the balance of nature is through superior technology, higher technology, more technology. If technology can destroy the balance, why can't technology regain it? Anything that can be destroyed can be created.

 And now it is almost feasible to float cities in the sky, in the air, in big, enormous balloons! There is no need for man to live on the earth. And it will be really beautiful -- floating cities in the air, and the green earth below you, huge forests again as the earth used to be before man started cutting forests. The earth can become the same again. You can come back to the earth for holidays.

 It is possible now to float cities in the ocean, and that will be beautiful. It is possible now to make underground cities so the earth, its greenery, its beauty, is not destroyed. You can live in air-conditioned cities underneath the earth. You can come once in a while for your Sunday prayer to the earth, and go back. It is possible for man now to be transported to another planet. The moon may become our next colony, the moon may become our habitation.

 The way is not by regressing; it is not possible to regress. Now man cannot live without electricity and man cannot live without all the comforts that technology has made available. And there is no need either -- it will become so poor a world. You don't know how man had lived in the past, always starving, always ill. You don't know how man had lived in the past; people have forgotten. You don't know how low the average age was in the past: if twenty children were born only two would survive. Life was very ugly.

 And without machines there was slavery. It is only because of machines that slavery has disappeared from the earth. If more machines come then more of this slavery will disappear. Horses will be free again if more cars are there; oxen will be free again if more machines are there to do their work; animals can be free again.

 Freedom was not possible without machines. If you drop machines man will again become slaves. There will be people who will start dominating and forcing. You see the pyramids? They look so beautiful, but each pyramid was made in such a way that millions of people died in making it. That was the only way to make it. All the beautiful palaces of the world, and the forts.... Much violence has happened, only then could they be made. The Great Wall of China -- millions of people died in making it. They were forced, generations of people were forced, to just make this China Wall. Now people go and see it, and they have completely forgotten that it represents a very ugly chapter of history.

 For the first time electricity and technology have taken all the work; man need not do it. Technology can free man absolutely from work and the earth can be playful for the first time. Luxury is possible for the first time. There is no need to go back.
