On the edge of Marrakech in Morocco, near a dusty village, I came across little Mohammed.
I bought one of the simple drawings that he was selling.
We became instant friends.
Mohammed was nine years old, black, bald headed, and had various skin complaints.
He had a happy smile.

Mohammed learnt that I had a stomach ache.
I learnt that Mohammed attended school, that he earned a few coins by mending bicycles for passers-by and that his father was a permanent invalid with a lung complaint.
Next day, as I passed the village, little Mohammed came running towards me, holding tight a package containg powder for my stomach - a Berber recipe.
Mohammed, I learnt later, had begged money from his mother and had walked barefoot into town to buy the precious powder. The medicine worked.

I visited Mohammed's crowded fly-ridden home, which was beside a hot dusty quarry.
The home had no running water, no glass in the windows and hardly any furniture. All Mohammed's brothers and sisters had bad coughs.
Mohammed gave me, as a present, his most prized possession, a small broken toy statue of the Eiffel tower.
I took Mohammed to the local free clinic to have his skin complaint examined. The nurse explained that there was nothing she could do as the problem was the crowded house with its lack of running water.

"Within a two month period, there have been 7 foreigner deaths (in Pattaya)" reported the Pattaya Mail in a recent edition. 42 year old Peter D was assaulted by a gang of knife wielding thugs and had to receive 70 stitches. The attack took place at a bar on Soi 2, in Pattaya. 35 year old Brian E lost most of his valuables when his South Pattaya hotel room was burgled....

23 year-old Johanne M from Cheshire was raped and murdered by a Thai monk. Her body was found south-west of Bangkok.
24-year old Kirsty J was raped and killed in a guesthouse in Chiang Mai.
On the island of Phuket a 22 year old student from Lanarkshire was brutally raped.

What was Churchill's attitude to Jews and to the setting up of a Jewish state?

Another Churchill friend was Rufus Isaacs (above) who became (as Lord Reading) both viceroy of India and foreign secretary.
Isaacs was suspected of having had a hold over certain politicians and of having used this to advance the cause of Zionism.
What was Churchill's attitude to Jews and to the setting up of a Jewish state?
In 1920, Churchill wrote about a Jewish state which would be linked to Britain: 'If as may well happen, there should be created in our own lifetime by the banks of the Jordan a Jewish State under the protection of the British Crown, which might comprise three or four millions of Jews, an event would have occurred in the history of the world which would, from every point of view, be beneficial.'
Churchill was the colonial secretary (1921-22) who had the job of implementing the Balfour Declaration.
In 1921, in the House of Commons, Churchill spoke in favour of Jewish land purchase in Palestine.
In 1922, Churchill's White Paper stated that the Jews were in Palestine 'of right, and not on sufferance'.
In the 1930s, Churchill opposed proposals to limit Jewish immigration into Palestine.
Churchill resisted the setting up of democratic institutions in Palestine, which would have given the Palestinians a chance to oppose the immigration into Palestine of Jews from Europe, America and elsewhere.
Churchill saw the Arabs as a "lower manifestation" of humanity, who would use their huge majority to keep out Jews.
Churchill preferred Jews to Arabs. But he apparently believed in conspiracy theories about the Jews.
