By Experiencing Something, We Can Pass Beyond It. Disappointment, failure, depression, anger, resentment, hatred, etc… Negative and positive states. We tend to get attached to the positive in our search for happiness, and then we become averse to the negative, which is not helped by any school-of-thought that encourages us to repress or deny the negative. If you don't allow yourself to acknowledge the negative in life, then you cannot ever understand it, cannot learn how to deal with it, cannot learn how to overcome it. If you deny, then you will be caught in a one-dimensional 'pleasant but numb' or often 'unpleasant and numb' existence. If you deny, then you will have no experience to share with others. Nothing to share but trivial pleasantness - which is ok if you are happy with that! Remembering that happiness, and perhaps more importantly - some level of feeling genuine - is important to healthy life.
